Oh, those negative sports writers. Just as former Lobo head coach Rocky Long gets hired as new San Diego State head man Brady Hoke's defensive coordinator, San Diego Union-Tribune scribe Mark Zeigler calls for SDSU to drop football. Ouch.
Is that going to happen? Absolutely not, say SDSU administrators, who are furious with Zeigler and the U-T for writing and printing an opinion piece that they fear will hurt recruiting as they attempt to rebuild the program under Hoke. Yet, the majority of readers who've responded to Ziegler's piece agree with him.
Zeigler makes a strong case, though SDSU disputes not only his conclusions but some of the information he bases them on. If nothing else, the story reflects the negativity and apathy that surround the Aztecs program -- the very things Hoke (and Long) have been hired to change with a better product on the field.
It's the existing reality, not Zeigler's interpretation of it, that Brady and Rocky must overcome.
